Nationals read it everywhere, and the majority even experience more than one occasion caused by the devastating impact of the ‘slowly but surely’ climate change issues. Starting in early October, Jakarta’s residents living near any body of water are preparing for a week full of floods and damp floors. Then, come all the news saying that Jakarta is sinking, followed by the discourse of moving Indonesia’s capital to other less-dense places that spark even more questions.

As the generation that will have more long-term impact, many youths come together to march to raise awareness of what is happening. They emphasize how people must get their acts together to preserve a sustainable future for the next generations. The message from one of the marches, ‘Fridays for Future,’ spread across cities worldwide, including 12 cities in Indonesia apart from Jakarta, such as Denpasar and Bengkulu.

The inspiration behind this mainly comes from the figure from the present youth movement, Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, whose youth worldwide claims to show conviction that they can make a difference. Demands these days for rapid action are coming from protesters who are essentially not more than 30 years old, for they would probably experience warmer and even more unpredictable climate changes in barely another 10 years

Even the younger generation understands and sees the crack amidst all the policy-making processes followed by the inconsistent outcomes; therefore, they decided to put matters into their own hands. It is safe to say that everyone, regardless of their age, wants to see consistency in government policy to support claims that they indeed care for those who will inherit our planet Earth.
